CAROL CARSON: Thursday 29th April 2021: 9.30am – 12.00pm

Abstract and Bios

As awareness grows, there has been an increase in the numbers of children with problematic/harmful sexual behaviours on the case loads of social workers, education staff, CAMHs workers, specialist sexual behaviour services and even youth justice workers.

This webinar provides an overview from research and practice about children with problematic/harmful sexual behaviours and considers the difference in understanding and working with younger children under 7 years old and older children who are aged between 8 – 12 years old, who are at different stages of cognitive and sexual development. It will provide suggestions for work with children and their families.

Carol Carson is an independent social work consultant working in safeguarding children for over 30 years and for 25 years, she has also specialised in assessing and working with children and adolescents with harmful sexual behaviours (HSB); she currently offers management services to the AIM Project. She has written a children’s book ‘Johnny and the Sparkles in his Pants’ for working with children aged 5 – 8 years old (2021) and is the author of the AIM Under 12s Assessment Model (2019) and co-author of the AIM Education Guidance (2021). Carol is currently doing a PhD working on developing an assessment model re autism and HSB.
